From PD. I was surprised to see, that Sirene actually transliterated as Silence O_o.

Thanks for scanning and uploading this book.
I have the book with me, and I could’ve worked on it… But thanks to you, I can now work on the Entertainment Bible featuring Super Robot Wars.

    Thank you very much!

I think you can safely ignore “Silence”. Most likely it’s a common Engrish mistake. The correct transliteration for “シレーヌ” would be “Sirène”, the French word for “Siren”, which in turn comes from Greek “Seirēn”. It’s a common case to see mistakes in transliterations made by Japanese when they use Katakana for other languages that aren’t English. The only case where I’ve seen it properly transliterated is in the figure of Maria Fleed’s mecha Minerva X from “Mazinger Angels”, also called “La Sirene de Noir” as its special form is based on Sirène from Devilman.

I believe that Nagai took inspiration for the original mythology of Devilman from Gustave Doré’s work in The Divine Comedy, which is why he used “シレーヌ” instead of “サイレン” (the Katakana for “Siren”) or “セイレーン” (the Katakana for “Seirēn”). It’s not as if there were many previous manga authors that dealt with Western mythological creatures before him.
